While in Australia, Barry purchased this ugly looking supermodified (#3) in 1970 fitted with a Chrysler Hemi motor. It was dubbed "The Beast" or "Dracula". Here he races at the Royale.

Barry in #3 at Liverpool, now with Chevy power, fighting an understeer as he chases Col Hicks in #53. On the Outside is American Johnny Anderson in the imported sprintcar #1. The sprintcar was subsequently purchased by Garry Rush and this began his legendary career as a sprintcar star.

Barry shipped the supermodified to NZ during the winter of 1972. Here he is trying it out at practice at Western Springs before the 1972-73 season. Before racing began, the car was renumbered # 26.

Kindred spirits, Garry Patterson and Barry Butterworth, were keen rivals on-track but friends away from racing. They were involved in a controversial match race series at West Capital Raceway in which Garry put Barry into the fence on the last corner and on Garry's victory lap Barry returned the compliment!

For the 1975-76 season, Barry drove the Marmont and Underwood-owned, ex-Willy Kay, sprintcar. Here he poses with the crew. He won the 1975-76 Auckland Supermodified Championship and was second in the 75-76 NZ championship.

The car was extensively rebuilt for the 76-77 season (above). The car handled much better and he won the 1976-77 Auckland Championship.

Harry Pierson (R) won the 1976-77 New Zealand Supermodified/Sprintcar Championship at Ruapuna with Barry B (L) a close second. A flat tyre in the first heat dashed any chance of Barry winning the championship.
